Midsommar is a 2019 folk horror film written and directed by Ari Aster, and produced by Square Peg, B-Reel Films, A24, Nordisk Film starrring Florence Pugh, Jack Reynor, William Jackson Harper, Vilhelm Blomgren, Ellora Torchia, Archie Madekwe, and Will Poulter. It follows a group of friends who travel to Sweden for a festival held every 90 years, only to be in the grip of Scandinavian pagan pagans.

THE REASONS WHY I LOVE THIS MOVIE?

I'll start with a cautionary note. You will not enjoy this if you are a fan of mainstream horror. It's not The Conjuring, there are no jump scares, and it's a leisurely film. It isn't frightening in the sense that most horror films are. It does not terrify you. It was a horrible experience. This is, without a doubt, an artistic film. Don't watch it if you don't like it.

Florence Pugh is a total force to be reckoned with. She is the film's heart and is responsible for keeping the viewer emotionally invested in such a terrible picture. It's one of the most terrifying performances I've ever seen.

The cinematography is really beautiful. I've never seen a film that is both violent and horrible while yet being incredibly beautiful. It features some of the greatest cinematography I've seen in a long time. The visual direction is also fantastic, creating a flowery, candy-colored nightmare world for us to explore.

And it is Ari Aster's writing and directing that distinguishes this film from other horror films. It's slow, deliberate, and unsettling. However, the characters are psychologically complex. The conversation is authentic and vivid. The narrative is bizarre and unsettling. Instead of jumping at you, he lets the horrors creep at you. He lets you see what's about to happen, digest it, and feel the shock of what's about to happen.

This film is incredibly violent, brutal, and gory, so be warned. It's quite terrifying, and it may include triggering material.
